New openings in Malaga and Marbella

The Golden Arches are continuing their march along the Costa del Sol, with McDonald’s opening another restaurant in the province in Puerto de la Torre at the end of 2025, with another on Calle Pacifico close to the Antonio Banderas promenade area newly opened this August. Meanwhile, Marbella recently welcomed a new McDonald’s on Avenida Duque de Ahumada.

The fast-food mega giant is a brand that always divides opinion. Many people cannot resist the familiarity of the menu and convenience it brings, they see the job opportunities that new openings create and view them as just another restaurant, while others question whether more international chains fit with the traditional character of coast, believe they are an eye-sore and have firm opinions that the food is pure junk.

El Chaparral McDonald’s had people talking

One of the most discussed recent arrivals was the McDonald’s restaurant in El Chaparral, Mijas. The outlet created new jobs and added another dining option for locals and visitors, but its location quickly became controversial. Positioned alongside a bright petrol station beneath a new luxury apartment development overlooking the sea, it prompted criticism from some who felt the setting was inappropriate.

Social media discussions saw some residents question the combination of high-end homes, commercial premises and a fast-food restaurant, while others pointed out that the commercial plans formed part of the original development proposals.

Calahonda McDonald’s opens earlier for breakfast

McDonald’s Calahonda has recently extended its opening hours, now welcoming customers from 9am for breakfast. The earlier start has been welcomed by customers looking for a morning coffee or breakfast option and reflects the changing nature of the Costa del Sol, where many areas now have large year-round populations rather than relying solely on seasonal tourism.

La Cala McDonald’s rumours fuel online reaction

Attention has now turned to speculation about a possible new McDonald’s in the La Cala de Mijas or Torrenueva area. There has been no official confirmation of a new restaurant, planning approval or opening date, but rumours circulating online have already generated plenty of discussion. Some locals have argued that the area needs more independent Spanish restaurants rather than additional global brands. Others have raised concerns about traffic, appearance and preserving the character of La Cala. However, not everyone is opposed. Supporters say another restaurant would bring choice, convenience and potential employment, particularly in an area that continues to grow.

Whether you welcome the drive thru after a long journey or would prefer they take their fillet-o-fish elsewhere, one thing is for sure, you won’t struggle to find one on the Costa Del Sol.
