Moraira’s Cala de l’Andragó reopens for swimming after water quality declared safe

Swimmers have been given the green light to return to Cala de l’Andragó in Moraira after follow-up water quality tests confirmed the cove is once again safe for bathing.

The temporary restriction, which was introduced as a precaution after routine sampling detected elevated microbiological levels, has now been lifted following confirmation from the Valencian regional authorities that the water meets the required health standards.

Teulada Town Hall announced that it had received official notification from the Directorate General for Environmental Quality confirming the latest analysis showed no issues, allowing the popular swimming spot to reopen.

The decision brings relief to residents, visitors and local businesses during one of the busiest periods of the summer tourist season.

Precautionary closure lasted just over a day

The swimming ban was imposed after routine monitoring identified abnormal microbiological values in the seawater. Although the results did not immediately point to the source of the problem, authorities acted quickly by prohibiting bathing while additional samples were collected and analysed.

The beach itself remained open, but swimmers were asked to stay out of the water until the results of the second round of testing were available.

Such closures are a standard public health measure designed to protect bathers whenever water quality falls below the strict standards required under European and Spanish regulations.

Latest tests confirm water is safe

The latest laboratory analysis confirmed that water quality at Cala de l’Andragó has returned to acceptable levels, meaning there is no longer any reason to restrict swimming.

As a result, local authorities have removed the bathing ban with immediate effect.

Teulada Town Hall also revealed that water quality checks carried out at the municipality’s other beaches and coves all received an “excellent” classification, highlighting the high environmental standards maintained along Moraira’s coastline.

Regular monitoring continues throughout summer

Water quality is monitored frequently across beaches in the Valencian Community during the summer months, particularly at popular tourist destinations such as Moraira.

Samples are analysed for bacteria and other indicators that could pose a risk to public health. If abnormal readings are detected, councils can temporarily ban swimming until follow-up testing confirms conditions have returned to normal.

While temporary closures can be disappointing for beachgoers, they are generally short-lived and are intended to ensure visitors can enjoy the coast safely.

With Cala de l’Andragó now officially reopened, holidaymakers and locals can once again enjoy one of Moraira’s best-known coves with confidence as the peak August season continues.
