Benalmadena plaza turned into a battleground of muscle, myth and spectacle

Greased up and tanned pecs with warriors clad in fur and leather descended on a Benalmadena plaza this weekend, flexing, posing and competing for trophies in the Barbarian Muscle festival.

This display of pure muscle once again came to the town on August 8, bringing in bodybuilders and fitness competitors from across the continent to Plaza de la Mezquita.

A costumed clash of strength

Competitors donned barbarian-style costumes as part of the event’s signature identity, taking to the stage across nine separate categories. Women competed in Bikini First Timers, Bikini Open and Wellness Open, while men battled it out across Men’s Physique First Timers, Bodybuilding First Timers, Men’s Physique Open, Classic Bodybuilding Open, Bodybuilding Master Open and Bodybuilding Open.

Judges and crowds gathered in groups to watch athletes compete in front of a packed square, with the areas local councillors Alejandro Carretero and Maria Luisa Robles part of the audience representing the local authority. Winners in each category walked away with replica Conan-style swords, while the best poser of the day received a trophy modelled on Thor’s hammer, both handed out on stage as part of the festival’s theatrical finish.

A qualifying event with real stakes

This year’s festival doubled as an official Pro Qualifier for the PCA Physical Culture Association, meaning winners earned a genuine step towards professional status rather than just a trophy. GARVE Health Management and Etenon Fitness sponsored the event.

Athletes eyeing the next step on the calendar won’t have long to wait, with Madrid scheduled to host a fresh round of competition later in August, keeping Spain’s bodybuilding scene busy through the rest of the summer.

Local backing and community spirit

Council representatives have stressed the value such events bring to the area, with officials noting that hosting a festival of this scale helps put Benalmadena on the map for visitors and competitors. Reflecting on the day, Benalmadena’s town hall offered its thanks to everyone involved, congratulating “the organisation, participants and everyone who enjoyed this sporting day.”
