Shoppers on the Costa del Sol will soon get a new low-price option as French chain Alcampo prepares to open its first company-owned supermarket in Andalucia. Plans put the store inside the Altos del Higueron shopping centre in Benalmadena, right by exit 1008 on the A-7, with doors expected to open late this year.
Alcampo has traded in the region since 1989, mostly through its larger hypermarket at La Cañada in Marbella. This 1,200-square-metre Alcampo Supermercado format is new for Andalucia and will employ around 40 people. Staffed counters for meat, fish, bakery, ready meals, charcuterie and cheese form a big part of the offer, plus a dedicated wine section. Everyday essentials sit alongside a wider range of brands.
Opening hours are expected to run from 9am to 10pm, including certain authorised Sundays and bank holidays. Online orders can be collected from refrigerated lockers on site. More than 100 parking spaces, a pharmacy, dental clinic, estate agent, café, offices and storage units already operate at the centre, which sits on the road between Mijas and Benalmadena Pueblo and has taxi and bus links.
Handy for Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Mijas shoppers
Residents in Benalmadena Pueblo, Los Pacos, Fuengirola and even Mijas Pueblo should find the location convenient, especially anyone using that part of the A-7 motorway. Alcampo regularly ranks among the cheapest national chains in independent price checks, and its Marbella store has long drawn praise for both selection and value. The new Benalmadena store looks set to bring similar benefits closer to home.
More choice at Altos del Higueron
RH Prive owns the shopping centre, and the arrival of Alcampo expands the mix of shops and services available in the Reserva del Higueron area. Locals who already know Alcampo’s reputation for competitive prices now have another reason to stop off on the main coastal road.
Independent price rankings are available from the OCU supermarket study. Full details of Alcampo’s Spanish network can be found on the company site.
