The 56th edition of the San Javier International Festival of Theatre, Music and Dance has brought the performing arts back to the streets over the weekend. On Saturday, August 15, the municipality celebrated its jaw-dropping Elipsión show, performed by Cadiz-based company El Carromato. Beginning at 10:00pm at the Yacht Club in Santiago de la Ribera, the free event was a stunning array of large, luminous structures, electronic music, and seamless pyrotechnic effects.
San Javier’s seafront transformed into futuristic stage
The impressive event combined these elements to transform the seafront of San Javier into a futuristic stage inhabited by surprising creatures moving among the crowds for about 50 minutes in a mobile parade, before ending at the Barnuevo Esplanade. The immersive electronic music and the production value helped to wow audiences, but the main event was the large characters, formed by luminous tubes and circular structures as they came alive, moved, and danced to the rhythm of the music.
Art meets living technology
This breathtaking show also told a story of living technology, and proposed a thought-provoking question of whether humans are prepared to coexist with an intelligence capable of behaving in an increasingly autonomous way. The show was directed and written by Adrián Varo, who is also responsible for the puppet and lighting design. The spectacle combined art, technology, and stagecraft in an experience created specifically to transform public spaces at nighttime.
El Carromato: More than a quarter of a century of global street theatre
El Carromato, the production company, was founded in 2000 in El Puerto de Santa Maria and ever since, has specialised in medium and large format travelling shows in which lighting becomes a fundamental part of the storytelling.
For more than a quarter of a century, the company has taken its productions to upwards of 30 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, and has participated in major international events and festivals, consolidating its own language based on the combination of street theatre, design, new technologies and great visual elements.
With the new performance of Elipsión, the San Javier Festival has once again transformed the municipality into a vibrant stage and taken one of its most visual proposals to Santiago de la Ribera, where the public enjoyed a close and personal encounter with curious creatures from an imaginary future.
