Loyal customers of Spain’s supermarket giant have been scrolling through social media hunting for answers about some of their favourite items that have vanished from the shelves this August.
Mercadona makes some changes
Have you been mooching the aisles this August searching for your regular buys on your shopping list only to discover they have disappeared? Mercadona, a firm favourite in the supermarket world, has spent 4 weeks fielding complaints from shoppers unable to find their usual go-to products. Puzzled customers flooded the retailer’s social media accounts through X, only to receive blunt replies such as “we no longer stock it” or “there’s no date planned for its return.”
Popular meals and snacks among the missing
Kitchen staples have taken the biggest hit. Bolognese sauce, margherita pizza, wine-braised pork cheeks, turkey sausages and TuttiFrutti ice cream have all been axed, as well as a strawberry-and-cream ice cream bar and a blended coffee blend. Fresh cauliflower pouches, “gajo” sauce and a cocoa-and-cereal growing-up milk round out the grocery list that have received the chop. Shoppers mourning the margherita pizza have been steered towards Mercadona’s frozen tomato-and-cheese or four-cheese versions instead, whilst those missing the gajo sauce have been offered a ranch-style dressing as a substitute. Natural peeled almonds and white clams are also now unavailable, with no comeback date given.
Hygiene, beauty, and home cleaning
A more personal change for some came with the removal of compact-applicator tampons being dropped, with soft-applicator versions recommended in their place, customers were left disappointed, “@Mercadona Hello!! Have you removed the 100% cotton super plus tampons without applicator? It’s just that they don’t come out in the app, I hope not, because they were my favorites”. Dark-toned Sol bronzing powder and Sinfonia cologne have both been pulled from sale.
Household favourites haven’t escaped either. Fresh air freshener has been swapped for the Essence spray version, and Spa fabric softener has given way to a Talco-scented alternative. Delicate-cleaning scouring pads sold in packs of three also appear to be missing from certain stores, though this particular withdrawal hasn’t yet been confirmed nationwide.
Will any of these products return?
Not every farewell looks final. Mercadona regularly cycles new lines in as older ones are retired, but this summer’s clear-out has clearly struck a nerve with regular shoppers. Some items, including the almonds and clams, may yet reappear once supply or demand issues are resolved, whereas others, such as the bolognese sauce and TuttiFrutti ice cream, seem to have gone for good.
