Two new traffic cameras have been installed at traffic lights on Avenida del Mar in Los Montesinos to detect motorists driving through a red signal.

Los Montesinos Local Police announced the installation as part of measures to improve road safety and monitor compliance at the junction.

The cameras will detect vehicles crossing when the traffic lights are red, allowing offences to be identified automatically.

Drivers face €200 fines and four penalty points

Under Spanish traffic regulations, failing to stop at a red light is considered a serious offence and carries a €200 fine and the loss of four points from a driving licence.

The introduction of the cameras means motorists travelling along Avenida del Mar will need to be particularly aware that compliance with the traffic signals is now being monitored.

Rather than relying solely on officers being present at the junction, the cameras provide a way of detecting vehicles that cross after the signal has turned red.

The system is intended to discourage motorists from taking risks at the lights and help ensure drivers stop when required.

New cameras aim to improve safety on Avenida del Mar

Local Police said the purpose of the new equipment is to improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians using Avenida del Mar.

Traffic-light-controlled junctions can present particular risks when drivers fail to stop, especially for pedestrians who may be crossing the road after receiving their own signal to proceed.

The force has also reminded road users to take particular care at traffic-light-controlled junctions and comply with the signals.

Installation of the two cameras forms part of the municipality’s wider work to reduce the risk of accidents and improve road safety in Los Montesinos.

Motorists warned to obey traffic signals in Los Montesinos

The new system means motorists using Avenida del Mar should now be aware that compliance with the red signal at the junction is being monitored by camera.

Drivers who fail to stop risk both a significant financial penalty and losing points from their driving licence.

The installation provides an additional enforcement measure at the Avenida del Mar traffic lights, while also serving as a visible reminder for motorists to follow the signals.

With the two cameras now in place, Local Police hope the additional monitoring will encourage greater compliance with the traffic lights and contribute to safer journeys for motorists and pedestrians throughout Los Montesinos.
