Young hiker rescued unharmed on Mount Roldan after frantic search on low phone battery

A routine morning hike turned into a tense rescue operation in Cartagena after a young woman became disorientated and lost on Mount Roldan. Thanks to a swift, coordinated response by quick-thinking emergency services personnel, the hiker was safely located within an hour of the initial distress call, escaping the ordeal unharmed despite facing harsh conditions in the mountainous area.

Alarm raised after hiker loses her way

The alert was received on Saturday afternoon at 2:48pm, when a worried family member contacted the Regional Emergency Coordination Centre, 112 Region of Murcia. The hiker had set off earlier that morning from the base of Mount Roldan, but as the hours passed, she became lost on the mountain’s winding trails and realised she was unable to find her way back.

A race against time on rugged terrain

The situation was particularly dangerous due to several factors: the hiker was navigating rugged terrain with no drinking water, and her mobile phone was on the verge of running out of battery. To make matters worse, she was trapped in an isolated area completely inaccessible to rescue vehicles, leaving foot patrols as the only viable option of rescuing her.

Firefighters pinpoint location using GPS

Recognising the urgent race against time before her phone died completely, firefighters from Cartagena’s Fire Extinction and Rescue Service immediately leapt into action. Their top priority was establishing direct phone contact to determine her precise position. The rescue team successfully extracted her GPS coordinates when they got in touch with her and narrowed down the search area.

Firefighters bring back the dehydrated hiker safe and sound

Navigating the challenging, steep landscape on foot, the firefighters reached her location at 3:59pm, just over an hour after the distress call was initially received. To the relief of her family and emergency responders, the young woman was found in good health and did not require medical assistance, despite having endured hours in the heat without any water.

The rescue team safely escorted the hiker back down the mountain, bringing a swift and successful end to what could have easily escalated into a far more dangerous situation.
