Top female winemakers unite at Martha’s Vineyard in Moraira for landmark event

Martha’s Vineyard, a boutique wine store host to some of Spain’s most unique and exceptional wines, hosted the “Women of the Vine” event at the end of August. The Moraira-based wine store, which has long been a favourite for local wine lovers, welcomed five of the top female winemakers in the entire country, marking a historic moment for the Costa Blanca and a beautiful atmosphere as the women presented their wines to the community.

A historic gathering of female winemakers on the Costa Blanca: Showcasing Spain’s finest wines and vintages

The event, which took place on Monday, August 24, was the first time that these five female entrepreneurs were united on the Costa Blanca.

Mara Baño, of Les Freses, presented her wine Ámfora, a dry Moscatel aged for 9 months in clay.

Isabel Salgado followed, and shared her gourmet SIAH, a coupage of Treixadura, Godello and Albariño, aged in Foudre. This wine was particularly praised for its incredible ageing potential.

Begoña Jovellar, who worked for 25 years as Vega Sicilia’s winemaker, told the other attendees about her new project, a Verdejo aged 3 years. 

One of the youngest female oenologists of Valencia, Sofia Cañizares, presented her young Giró, a wine that received 95 points at the 2025 edition of the Decanter World Wine Awards, a prestigious awards show for the finest international wines.

Finally, Maria del Yerro, of Alonso del Yerro, and President of the Grandes Pagos de España association, closed the event with her incredible wine, simply named “Maria”. It was a beautiful red wine worth taking the time to appreciate, from Tinto Fino in Ribera del Duero. 

Honouring the passion and ambition of female winemakers

The event held great importance for Martha Ardila, the owner of Martha’s Vineyard, because it pays homage to the work, passion and stories of the influence of Spanish women in wine.

“Each of the winemaking women is extremely talented and their paths have been full of challenging stories,” stated Martha about the event. “It’s quite an honour; there are not many opportunities to host five of the leading women in wine, especially during harvest season.”

Martha’s Vineyard is the go-to destination for wine lovers on the Costa Blanca, with a dedicated wine club taking place every month, as well as guided wine tastings every week for connoisseurs and curious newcomers. All in all, the boutique is celebrating the grand success of this pioneering event, and is already looking ahead to more successful editions in the near future.
