The Concejal Fernando Villena López Park in San Pedro del Pinatar became the vibrant hub of petanca on Saturday, August 29, as it hosted the anticipated second edition of the Torneo de Petanca de San Pedro del Pinatar. Bringing together more than a hundred players from across southeastern Spain, the day-long event showcased intense competition, sportsmanship, and a thriving community spirit.
More than 60 teams and 100 players gather for early kick-off
Organised in the fixed-doubles format, the tournament attracted 63 two-player teams representing clubs from Murcia, Almeria, and Alicante. Play kicked off early in the morning at 8:30am under ideal conditions, drawing enthusiastic local spectators and supporters to the park courts to follow the action throughout the day.
National and European champions headline event
This year’s line-up featured an exceptionally high standard of play, headlined by top-tier talent from the national and international petanca circuit. Among the standout competitors were Spanish national champion Jordi Martínez and European bronze medallist “Pirolo,” both of whom brought elite-level precision and strategy to the competition and elevated the prestige of the local event.
Two-tier format ensures high stakes for all
The tournament structure offered high stakes across two distinct categories: a main competition bracket for top-performing teams and a secondary consolation division. This two-tier format ensured that every participating team enjoyed an extended day of competitive matches regardless of early-round results, with substantial prizes awarded to the finalists in both categories.
A celebration of sport and community spirit
The gathering delivered a community celebratory atmosphere that highlighted San Pedro del Pinatar’s commitment to supporting local sporting events. Organisers praised the high turnout of the tournament, the fair play demonstrated across all matches, and the strong camaraderie shared among players from neighbouring provinces.
Following the resounding success of this second edition, local officials and sports organisers aim to build on this momentum, cementing the Torneo de Petanca as an annual fixture on the region’s fun-filled competitive sporting calendar.
