Parents told to stop using children’s mouthwash as Spain orders urgent recall

Parents across Spain are being urged to check a popular children’s mouthwash after health authorities ordered several batches to be withdrawn from sale following the discovery of potentially harmful bacteria.

Spain’s Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has announced the immediate withdrawal of several batches of FluorKIN Infantil Fresa Enjuague Bucal, a strawberry-flavoured mouthwash aimed at children, after tests detected contamination with the bacterium Burkholderia cepacia.

Which products are affected?

The recall applies to the following batches:

• 26B01
• 26B04
• 26B05
• 26B06

The final three batch numbers correspond to promotional 2-for-1 packs.

The manufacturer has been ordered to stop selling the affected products, remove them from shops and pharmacies, and recover any remaining stock already on the market.

Why is the bacteria a concern?

According to the AEMPS, the contamination involves Burkholderia cepacia, a bacterium that is generally harmless to healthy people but can cause serious infections in those with weakened immune systems or certain underlying health conditions.

Young children receiving treatment for illnesses, or those with compromised immune systems, are considered the group most at risk.

There have been no reports of widespread illness linked to the recalled mouthwash, but the agency says the precautionary action is necessary to protect consumers while the affected batches are removed from circulation.

What parents should do now

Anyone who has a bottle from one of the affected batches is advised not to use it.

Instead, parents should return the product to the shop or pharmacy where it was purchased or contact the company responsible to arrange its return. Health authorities have stressed that the recalled mouthwash should not continue to be used, even if it appears unopened or in good condition.

Parents who are unsure whether their bottle is affected should check the batch number printed on the packaging or bottle label before allowing children to use it.

A reminder about product safety

Although recalls involving children’s oral care products are uncommon, Spain’s medicines agency regularly monitors cosmetic and healthcare products and can order immediate action whenever contamination or manufacturing issues are identified.
