Police launch investigation after body found in Jerez rubbish container

The Spanish National Police are investigating the discovery of a man’s lifeless body in Cadiz. The cadaver was found inside a rubbish container near a bus stop at the end of Calle Sevilla, a road in the centre of Jerez de la Frontera.

According to police sources speaking to local news outlet EFE, the body was discovered by a municipal cleaning worker on the morning of Friday, September 4, at around 8:30am. The worker immediately notified the National Police, who cordoned off the area and are awaiting a judge’s authorisation to remove the body from the container. Currently, the identity of the deceased man, as well as the cause and circumstances of his death, are unknown.

Police are keeping all lines of inquiry open regarding the discovery and are awaiting the results of the forensic examination and the autopsy, which will be crucial in determining the cause of the man’s death.

The active investigation of the crime has caused traffic to slow down in the centre of Jerez de la Frontera, particularly the access to Avenida Álvaro Domecq in one of its directions.

A shocking discovery: Similar incidents in Spain

Historically, the discoveries of a lifeless body in rubbish bins in Spain are few and far between. Typically, these instances have been as a result of tragedies in which people accidentally fall inside waste containers in order to retrieve something or while intoxicated and are unable to climb back out.

One of the most recent examples of this happened just days ago on September 2, when a young man who allegedly stole a backpack from a homeless person jumped into a rubbish container in the hopes of escaping the police in Cartagena, Murcia. The young man had been hiding in the rubbish bin when a compactor truck arrived to carry out its usual collection. The young man unfortunately sustained fatal injuries due to the truck’s compacting system.

Another example happened earlier this year in Lloret de Mar, when police investigated a shooting and another body was found in a rubbish bin.

In 2022, in the Eixample district of Barcelona, the city was shaken when part of a body was discovered inside another rubbish bin, stuffed inside a suitcase.
