Calvià has secured a place among Europe’s top tourism destinations after being shortlisted for the final stage of the European Capitals of Tourism 2027 competition, putting one of Mallorca’s best-known municipalities firmly in the international spotlight.

The European Commission announced on Tuesday that Calvià is one of just 16 destinations across the continent to progress to the next round of the prestigious contest, which celebrates excellence in sustainable and innovative tourism.

The recognition comes at a time when Mallorca continues to face the challenge of balancing its popularity with the need to protect local communities, natural spaces and infrastructure.

Recognition for sustainable tourism

This year’s competition introduces a new format, combining the former European Smart Tourism Capital and European Green Pioneer awards into a single title: European Capitals of Tourism.

Judges assessed applications based on several key areas, including sustainability, accessibility, digital innovation, support for cultural heritage and the promotion of local creativity and talent.

Calvià was selected in the category for towns and cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000. It joins fellow Spanish destination Ibiza, alongside finalists from France, Germany, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Croatia.

Originally, only four finalists were expected in each category, but organisers expanded the shortlist to eight after several destinations achieved identical evaluation scores.

Final presentation in Brussels

The next stage of the competition will see representatives from each shortlisted destination travel to Brussels on November 18 and 19, where they will present their tourism strategies to an independent European jury.

Following those presentations, two overall winners will be named as the European Capitals of Tourism 2027 later this year.

A boost for Mallorca

For Calvià, which includes internationally recognised resorts such as Magaluf, Palmanova, Santa Ponsa and Peguera, reaching the final is another endorsement of its efforts to modernise its tourism model.

The municipality has recently unveiled a long-term tourism strategy aimed at diversifying its visitor offering while maintaining its reputation as one of Europe’s leading sun-and-sea destinations. Plans include promoting culture, sport, inland attractions and year-round tourism to reduce seasonal pressures.

Even if Calvià does not ultimately win the title, making the European shortlist places the municipality among the continent’s leading destinations for sustainable tourism and gives Mallorca another opportunity to showcase its commitment to responsible travel on an international stage.

Helpful for the local economy

A European tourism title would do more than add another trophy to Calvià’s collection. International recognition could help attract new visitors, encourage investment and strengthen the municipality’s reputation as a destination that offers far more than beaches and nightlife.

Businesses, hotels and restaurants could all benefit from the increased exposure, while residents would hope that future tourism growth continues to focus on sustainability and improving quality of life. Even reaching the final gives Calvià valuable publicity on a European stage.
