Almuñecar jazz festival brings three nights of live music to Costa Tropical

Jazz heads on Granada’s Costa Tropical have three evenings of jazz when the II Ciclo de Jazz de Almuñecar takes place from September 18 to 20.

The Casa de la Cultura will host the concerts, organised by Juventudes Musicales de Almuñecar with support from Almuñecar’s Culture department and Juventudes Musicales de España. Each live performance starts at 8pm, with different approaches to modern jazz and improvisation.

Christopher Pérez Quartet opens the programme on Thursday, September 18. The group won first prize at the fourth Juventudes Musicales de España Jazz Competition and features Christopher Pérez on saxophone, David Muñoz on double bass, Daniel Pimenta on drums and Guillaume Coulbois on piano.

Modern jazz and creative music form the basis of the quartet’s sound, with improvisation central to its performances.

ML Quartet brings ‘Cicatrices’ to Almuñecar

Friday, September 19, sees ML Quartet take to the stage with Cicatrices. The group features Luque Regodón on double bass, Christopher Pérez on saxophone, Biel Harper on piano and Lluís Pérez-Villegas on drums.

Their music draws on modern jazz, improvised music, traditional folklore and flamenco. Cicatrices, released in 2024, is built around personal experiences, learning and the way the past can influence the present and future.

ML Quartet won second prize at the 110th edition of the Juventudes Musicales de España Jazz Competition in 2024.

Cuba and Brazil provide the closing night

Ede & Fe Quartet will finish the cycle on Saturday, September 20, with Músicas de Cuba y Brasil.

Ede Pedroso, Fe Wilhelmi, Miguel Ángel Corral and Enrique Lugones will take jazz into Cuban, Brazilian and wider Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking musical traditions. Their repertoire includes works by Bola de Nieve, Chabuca Granda, Portillo de la Luz, Martha Valdés, Aldemaro Romero and José Antonio Méndez, plus original material.
