Torrox Tourist Day celebrates town’s biggest economic engine

Saturday, September 26 puts Torrox’s twelfth Tourist Day on the calendar, wrapping the summer with free culture, water sport and a night gala at the Balcon Mirador in Torrox Costa. Mayor Oscar Medina set out the plan this week, including awards for local firms and the Turistas del Ano 2026 prize.

Medina has called tourism the town’s main growth engine since the 1970s and thanked more than 2,000 self-employed traders who open every day, pay tax and create jobs. This year’s special guests are Malaga Club de Futbol and businessman Jose Luis Lopez, known as “el turronero”, chosen for family ties to Torrox and years of promotion. Merceria y Regalos Cristina and Luka’s Cafe also receive recognition for long service.

Morning tours, snorkel and hieroglyphs

Doors open at 9am with a guided walk through the old town, capped at 30 people. Book at the central tourist office, turismo@torrox.es or 952 530 225. Half an hour later a snorkel session runs off Calaceite, again limited to 30 and weather-dependent; sports staff take bookings on 952 539 927 or deportes@torrox.es.

From 11am to 1pm the El Faro interpretation centre hosts a family hieroglyph-writing workshop for 25 people, children with an adult. Afternoon brings another 30-place guided visit to the lighthouse archaeological site between 7pm and 9pm. Gala, awards and fireworks

Gala time is 8.30pm at the Balcon Mirador. Dance troupe The New Crew opens, prizes follow, then DJ Juan Magan plays a free set. Fireworks leave El Espigon at midnight. Moreno said each edition improves on the last and called the viewpoint “an emblem of Torrox Costa”.

Medina promised a special night and invited residents and holidaymakers to join. Extra tourist-information staff already cover Ferrara, El Morche and the old customs house through mid-September, so questions on the day should be easy to answer.
