Catral launches crackdown on illegal dumping of furniture and bulky waste

Catral Town Hall has launched a special campaign to tackle the illegal dumping of furniture, mattresses, electrical appliances and other bulky household items in public areas.

The Catral Limpio campaign will combine information for residents with increased monitoring and enforcement, as the council urges people to use the municipality’s collection service rather than abandoning unwanted items beside bins or elsewhere in the street.

Council targets illegal dumping across Catral

Municipal workers are currently having to spend time almost every morning locating and removing bulky items that have been dumped incorrectly around the municipality.

The council says dealing with abandoned furniture, mattresses and appliances requires staff and vehicles that could otherwise be carrying out other municipal work.

Over the coming weeks, the Catral Limpio campaign will increase efforts to identify where the problem is occurring and encourage residents to dispose of unwanted household items correctly.

Municipal services will record incidents and identify locations where illegal dumping happens most frequently.

The information gathered will help the council focus its response on areas where the problem is particularly persistent.

Local Police will increase targeted checks

Enforcement will form another part of the campaign, with Catral Local Police carrying out targeted checks.

Where discarded furniture, appliances or other items contain information or clues that could indicate where they came from, the council says appropriate investigations will be carried out.

The campaign is intended to make clear that leaving bulky waste in public areas is not an acceptable alternative to arranging a proper collection.

Residents should not leave sofas, mattresses, household appliances, furniture or similar unwanted items beside ordinary rubbish containers or elsewhere on public streets.

Free collection service available to residents

Instead, Catral provides a municipal collection service allowing residents to arrange for bulky household waste to be picked up.

The council is asking people to contact the service before disposing of large unwanted items, helping municipal workers manage collections properly and preventing furniture and appliances from accumulating in public spaces.
