Jávea’s Arenal beach was transformed into a sporting arena on Sunday, September 27, as hundreds of athletes took to the water, roads and running course for the 14th TriXàbia Memorial Edu Monfort.
The annual event brought swimming, cycling and running together for another major day on the local sporting calendar, with more than 500 athletes taking part across its different categories.
Organised by Club Esportiu Llebeig Jávea, the competition began early in the morning, with the first athletes setting off at 8.30am from the Arenal area.
Three challenges in one
Competitors could choose between Sprint and Olympic distances, while relay options allowed teams of two or three people to share the three disciplines.
The Sprint triathlon consisted of a 750-metre swim, followed by a 20-kilometre cycle and a five-kilometre run.
The Olympic distance doubled the challenge, requiring competitors to swim 1,500 metres before completing a 40-kilometre cycling route and a 10-kilometre run.
The different formats allowed experienced triathletes and those looking for a shorter challenge to compete alongside one another.
The Arenal provided a dramatic starting point, with competitors emerging from the Mediterranean before heading onto the cycling and running sections of the course.
Hundreds behind the scenes
The event involved far more people than those crossing the finish line.
Around 300 volunteers helped make the competition possible, supporting organisers and athletes throughout the different stages of the race.
The large-scale event also required temporary traffic arrangements in Jávea, particularly around the Arenal and along sections of the cycling and running routes.
Police and organisers had advised residents and visitors to follow temporary restrictions and road signs while the competition was taking place.
For spectators, the disruption was accompanied by a lively atmosphere around the Arenal as supporters gathered to watch competitors tackle each stage.
Remembering Edu Monfort
Behind the sporting challenge is also a story of remembrance.
The event has been held as the TriXàbia Memorial Edu Monfort since 2017, honouring Edu Monfort, a member of the Llebeig athletics club who died while training.
His memory remains central to the annual competition, which brings together athletes, club members, volunteers and supporters in his honour.
The TriXàbia itself dates back to 2012, while Club Esportiu Llebeig Jávea has been responsible for organising the event since 2015.
Over the years, the competition has become an established fixture for Jávea’s sporting community, combining a demanding athletic challenge with the town’s Mediterranean setting.
Sunday’s 14th edition once again saw the Arenal filled with competitors and supporters as athletes pushed themselves through three very different disciplines.
From the opening swim in the Mediterranean to the final kilometres on foot, the TriXàbia provided a full morning of sporting action in Jávea while continuing the tradition of remembering Edu Monfort.
