Imagine escaping to Mallorca for a relaxing break, sinking into soft hotel pillows and enjoying the tranquillity of Santanyí, only for your peaceful night to turn into a terrifying ordeal. Instead of waking to the gentle morning light over the island, you discover an unknown man inside your bedroom, standing beside you as you sleep.

That was the frightening situation faced by a couple staying at a hotel in Santanyí,  when a 20-year-old German tourist allegedly entered their room while they were asleep in the early hours of the morning, reported by Europa Press on October 8.

The Guardia Civil arrested the young man following the incident, which left the unsuspecting holidaymakers confronting a stranger who had entered their private space without permission.

Stranger enters through hotel terrace door

According to the Guardia Civil’s account of events, the tourist accessed the room through a sliding door leading to the terrace. The couple had been asleep when the man allegedly made his way inside, without forcing any doors or locks.

The situation took an alarming turn when the intruder reportedly approached the woman as she lay in bed beside her husband. Faced with an unexpected stranger in their room, the woman immediately pushed him away. Together, she and her husband managed to get the man out of their bedroom.

Rather than simply letting him disappear into the hotel, the couple took him to reception and waited for the police to arrive. Hotel staff kept the man there until officers from the Guardia Civil arrived to investigate.

Tourist reportedly heavily intoxicated

The Guardia Civil’s Operational Service Centre received a report that a man was being held at the hotel reception after allegedly entering another guest’s room.

Officers from Santanyí attended the scene and spoke to both the couple and the suspect. According to the police account, the young man showed clear signs of heavy intoxication and was speaking incoherently.

Although the incident could have been deeply distressing for the couple, officers reported that no belongings had been stolen and there was no evidence of forced entry.

The absence of theft or damage, however, did not change the circumstances of the alleged intrusion: the couple had been asleep in their own hotel room when a stranger entered without their consent.

Mobile phone challenge given as explanation

Perhaps one of the most surprising details emerged when the tourist reportedly explained his actions to police.

According to the Guardia Civil, he claimed that he had entered the room because of a challenge he had seen on a mobile phone application.

The account raised an extraordinary question about what could motivate someone to enter a room occupied by sleeping strangers, although the precise nature of the alleged challenge has not been detailed in the report. There is no indication that the couple had any prior connection to the man.

Arrested after Santanyí hotel incident

Following statements from the couple and an assessment of the circumstances, the Guardia Civil arrested the 20-year-old on suspicion of unlawful entry into an occupied private space.

He was taken to the Guardia Civil station in Santanyí while officers prepared the necessary paperwork, before he was due to appear before the appropriate judicial authority.

The incident at the hotel took place in the early hours of October 3 and was reported by the UIltimate Hora on October 8.

For this couple, what should have been an ordinary night’s sleep instead became a frightening encounter with a stranger in the one place where they expected privacy and security: their own bedroom.
