Helmets on, ropes checked, eyes fixed on the top. Climbers of every age, from under-9s to veterans, are heading to Estepona on October 24 and 25 to compete for Andalucian titles.
What is happening?
Andalucia’s Lead Climbing Championship is coming to Estepona climbing wall, as the second point of three rounds in the 2026 Andalucian Cup, running 2 full days, Saturday October 24 from 8am to 10pm, and Sunday October 25 from 7.45am to 5.30pm.
Local club Grupo de Montaña Estepona (GRUME) and the Andalucian Mountain, Climbing and Hiking Federation (FADMES) are running the competition, with help from Estepona Town Hall. Age groups run from under-9s to veterans, with an open category and a Promotion category too. The youngest climbers, in the under-9, under-11 and under-13 groups, use “top rope”, where the safety rope is fixed from above.
Everyone from the under-15s upwards competes in “flash” and “a vista” formats. In flash, climbers can receive advance information about the route. In “a vista”, they attempt it without a preview, testing their climbing skill and knowledge.
Promotion climbers can compete in mixed groups, in a category that is reserved for athletes who have not reached a Cup podium in the past two years in the under-19, Absolute or Veteran groups.
Are you a climber who would like to take part?
Registration closes tomorrow, Friday, October 16, through fadmes.es. Competitors need a valid annual licence from FADMES or the Spanish mountaineering federation, FEDME, to claim podium places and Cup points. For the Andalucian Championship itself, that licence must have been processed by the Andalucian federation. Climbers will then head to Huelva in November for the final Cup round.
Spectators can enjoy the bar
If climbing is less of something you like to do and more something to like to watch, then you can head along and spectate, where you will find a charity bar set up for both days. For more information on the competition as a whole, visit the Estepona Town Hall website.
