Travelling on Malaga’s busy C-1 line turned into a tragedy when a man was struck by a Cercanias train near Fuengirola, leaving passengers trapped onboard for hours as emergency services responded.
Emergency services confirmed the man’s death after the incident near the Torreblanca tunnel late on Monday, November 2. Services were forced to stop, with six trains affected before normal operations resumed in the early hours of Tuesday.
What happened near Torreblanca
Witnesses told Spanish media that the man was struck shortly after 11pm on Monday, in the area of the Torreblanca tunnel. Renfe, Spain’s national train operator, informed passengers through its WhatsApp travel-information channel at 11.36pm that the C-1 service had been suspended between Benalmadena and Fuengirola after a person was struck by a train.
Spain’s emergency coordination service, 112, later confirmed that the man had died. His identity has not been released. Early reports suggested he may have entered the tracks at an unauthorised crossing point intending to take his own life, although this has not been officially confirmed.
Passengers held onboard for hours
People travelling on the affected train were unable to leave the carriage until after 1.30am. One passenger wrote on social media: “They did not let us leave until the judge released the body. Horrible.”
Renfe said the train was authorised to resume movement at 1.28am and was taken out of service at Fuengirola five minutes later. Normal services were fully restored at 1.50am.
Police investigate the death
Spain’s National Police are handling the formal proceedings following the man’s death. Renfe stated that he had accessed the railway through an unauthorised crossing point.
By Tuesday morning, services were reported to be running normally again, with no further mobility problems on the line after the All Saints’ public-holiday period.
Another difficult night on the C-1 line
This tragedy came less than a day after another late-night disruption on the same route. On Sunday, November 1, the final Cercanias train from Malaga to Fuengirola stopped at Torremolinos station shortly before midnight because of a technical fault, leaving around 20 passengers stranded.
For regular passengers, two serious disruptions in quick succession will renew concerns about reliability on a line used by thousands of people every day. Anyone travelling between Malaga, the airport and the western Costa del Sol can check official Cercanias updates before setting out, particularly during evening services.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. In Spain, call 024 for the suicide and emotional-distress helpline, or 112 in an emergency.
