An unused wheelchair could mean much more to someone else than its owner realises. Age Concern Estepona is appealing for donations of mobility equipment to help vulnerable older residents, warning in its appeal of an “immediate and critical shortage” of wheelchairs.

Residents with a manual wheelchair, transport chair or other mobility aid they no longer use are being asked to consider donating it. Equipment must be in good working condition so it can support someone who needs help getting around.

“Your donation will directly restore independence and dignity to a local senior in need,” the charity says.

How to donate a wheelchair to Age Concern Estepona

Donations can be taken to Age Concern’s premises at Avenida Valencia 9, Estepona. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 2pm.

Anyone wishing to discuss an item before bringing it in can telephone +34 951 74 10 74 or email info@acestepona.info, the contact details for its office and mobility equipment service.

Collection is also an option for donors in Estepona or Manilva who cannot transport their equipment, residents can call or send the charity a direct message to arrange a pick-up.

Donations support an existing mobility equipment service

Age Concern Estepona and Manilva already runs a mobility equipment loan service, listing wheelchairs, walking frames and bathroom aids among the items it provides. Its aim is to help people maintain mobility and independence through access to suitable equipment. Borrowers can contact the team directly to check availability and discuss arrangements.

Practical support for the local expat community

Mobility assistance is a big part of the fantastic work done by this volunteer-run, non-profit association. Its other services include companionship, help with S1 forms, pension and benefits advice, and assistance dealing with social services — useful points of support for English-speaking residents navigating life in Spain.

Age Concern says donations to its shop help sustain its community services and food bank. Residents without mobility equipment can also contribute clothing or bric-a-brac, providing another practical way to support its work in Estepona and Manilva.

If you know of anyone who may also be able to help with donating, then pass on to friends or local community groups to help reach somebody with a wheelchair they no longer need, giving that equipment a new purpose close to home.
