THE Plaza Mayor Shopping Centre is now 10 years old and reports that sales and visitor numbers are on the rise.
The shopping and leisure centre received 9.6 million visitors in 2011, which was 1.1 per cent more than the previous year, and made €103.57 million, which is just 0.14 per cent more than in 2010. Over its 10-year existence, it has been visited by 71.6 million people. Plaza Mayor employs 1,000 people directly and a further 350 indirectly.
The centre was given a larger shopping area in 2008 and now has 146 shops and 3,230 parking spaces. The area which was formerly occupied by nightclubs and bars is currently empty following brawls which led to the decision to do away with it, but it will soon be leased for shopping areas and restaurants.
