Rory McIlroy has called off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
Just days after posting out wedding invitations, Golfer Rory McIlroy has called off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
The former world number one golf champ said he ended the relationship with Caroline Wozniacki, 23, after realising he was not ready for marriage.
McIlroy, a two-time major winner, issued a statement after talking to Wozniacki.
25-year-old McIlroy said: “There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people.”
The said: “The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.
“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”
The pair, who announced their engagement via Twitter on January 1, 2014, were one of the sporting world’s most successful couples.
Wozniacki, who reached world number one in 2012, flaunted her diamond engagement ring, reportedly worth well over £100,000, at the Australian Open.
Just last Sunday the couple were spotted in Monte Carlo’s Nobu branch, looking happy together.
