Mallorca wine production is on the increase.
The ‘Vins de Mallorca’ Protected Geographic Indication (IGP) has the highest levels of production and sales in the Balearic Islands. More than 16,153 hectolitres were sold in 2013.
Seeing that wines under the IGP experienced benefits, several producers have preferred to join the group, led by the Balearic Islands’ oldest winery, Hereus de Ribas, which founded the Binissalem Designation of Origin (DO).
More recently, the heir of the Mesquida winery from Porreres, which was under the Pla i Llevant Designation of Origin, has also launched a new project under the IGP.
Sales of wines under the Pla i Llevant Designation of Origin regulation have fallen by 5.3% since then (in 2013) while Binissalem wines saw sales rise by more than 17% in the same year.
The Binissalem region is totally dedicated to the wine sector and has made a big deal of harvesting celebrations to attract visitors.
Meanwhile, those within IGP say that their wines are of a high quality, but the simple fact that they are from Mallorca helps them to sell abroad.
