Spanish coasts hold one in six of world’s blue flags

THE number of blue flags flying on Spanish beaches this summer will rise to 577, a new record for the country which once again tops the lists.
Four new beaches have been awarded blue flags for this summer, and 101 ports will also be flying the flags, bringing the total number on Spanish coasts to 678.
Galicia holds the most flags with 150, followed by Valencia with 134, Cataluña with 114 and Andalucia with 95. Of the 233 municipalities which applied for flags this year, 220 of them had their applications approved.
The flags show that standards for water quality and environmental regulations, disabled access, lifeguard services and other important issues are met by the area in question, and 20 per cent of Spanish beaches will be flying them this summer.
In fact, one in six of the blue flags flying across the world will be found in Spain.
