ELCHE councillor, Cristina Martinez, has expressed concern that there are not enough police to cover the town during the holiday months. The summer period between June and September are the traditional months where public servants take their annual leave. These months are also when the town is busiest with tourists and summer events.Cristina Martinez said that there needed to be a recruitment drive, as well as authorised overtime to ensure that the town was able to deliver the service required. Martinez also criticised the policy of the previous council led by PP as under their control there were 18 retirements without any new recruits.Currently the local police have 347 staff comprising of officers and management. The budget for the service has funds for 380 staff and Cristina said that there needed to be an increase in officers to meet the needs of the municipality.
