Barcelona couple arrested for abuse of newborn baby

A BARCELONA couple have been arrested on suspicion of physical abuse of their 28-day-old baby who has been admitted to hospital in a serious condition. Catalan police arrested them on Tuesday night after being alerted by hospital authorities.
The baby was admitted to hospital when the 20-year-old parents, who live in the Nou Barris district, called the emergency 112 number saying that the infant had stopped breathing.
After examining the baby, hospital staff found that its injuries were consistent with those inflicted by physical abuse. The couple remain in police custody and are due to appear in court.
