SEMAF Spanish train drivers’ and railway workers’ union has called four 24-hour strikes for September.
A union representative announced that Renfe drivers had agreed to strike on September 4, 11, 14 and 15 and declared that other unions may join in as they had shown an interest in holding protests over a lack of results in negotiations regarding working conditions and human resources matters.
The union said it “had no choice but to go on strike.”
Comisiones Obreras union had already announced last week that it would call rail strikes for September after negotiations with Renfe collapsed. According to the union an extra 1,125 employees are needed to address a serious lack of maintenance on trains.
A demonstration outside the Ministry of Public Works and Development in Madrid is also planned for Saturday, September 12.
