Arriving at the Nou Camp on August 17 with a surprising 4–0 lead from the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup, Athletic Bilbao would have been forgiven for expecting a very hard match. In the event, despite a Lionel Messi goal just before half time, Athletic Bilbao equalised through Ariz Aduriz following a sending-off for Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, husband of Shakira.
The Supercopa de España – or the Spanish Super Cup – is a Spanish football championship contested by the winners of La Liga and the La Liga. In the event that a team wins both La Liga and the Copa del Rey, the runners-up of the Copa del Rey, in this case Athletic Bilbao, played against the winner of both La Liga and the Copa del Rey, which was Barcelona.
This is only the second success in the Supercopa for the team, which only recruits players from the Greater Basque area and has left Barcelona fans both surprised and upset although there will almost certainly be more silverware for their collection by the end of this season.
