IN 50 per cent of cases of abuse against the elderly in Mallorca, their children are the culprits.
According to the Lawyers’ Association, elderly people who request social care often face financial abuse which although hard to see, means that they lose the autonomy to solve daily problems.
Most of the victims of this kind of abuse are elderly women who are highly dependent, according to the author of the report, social worker Sofia Alonso. In the past five years, the number of people suffering financial abuse has risen to 17 per cent of all requests for help.
