FOR the first time since seven-year-old Yeremi Vargas, often referred to as the Spanish Madeleine McCann, went missing in March 2007, the Guardia Civil is formally investigating a suspect.

The man under investigation, Antena 3 TV has reported, lived in the same neighbourhood in Santa Lucia de Tirajana (Gran Canaria) as the family when the boy disappeared, has a police record for various offenses including aggression and domestic violence and is currently in jail awaiting trial for alleged child abuse.

The police force informed Yeremi’s family they had identified a suspect two weeks ago and would be investigating him for the alleged crimes of kidnapping and manslaughter, however there is no evidence of whether the boy is alive or not.

“I don’t know whether he’s alive, but having heard the news I have little hope left,” devastated mother Ithaisa Suarez said.
