HISTORIC DECISION: ‘Fiestas are at odds with Covid-19’, credit: Pixabay
ALMUÑECAR has decided to suspend this year’s town fiestas. Following a historic decision prompted by the Covid-19 crisis, Fiestas councillor Alberto Manuel Garcia Gilabert announced that there will be no fireworks on August 15 in honour of the Virgen de la Antigua. “The decision was expected and carefully thought through, but still produces a great amount of sadness,” Garcia Gilabert admitted. “Although August is three months away it’s obvious that our cherished fiestas are at odds with the coronavirus. Like other events worldwide, they had to be suspended to avoid crowded gatherings.” The entire fiestas Budget of €200,000 will be used to alleviate the “grave socio-economic consequences” that the Covid-19 health crisis has inflicted on the municipality, Garcia Gilabert said.
