CAMPELLO Town Hall will fund building new headquarters for the local Guardia Civil.
The last plenary council meeting approved an agreement between the local government and the Ministry of the Interior in Madrid, although only the Partido Popular-Ciudadanos-Vox coalition voted in favour of the motion.
Opposition parties maintained that it was the Ministry’s responsibility to stump up the €1.5 million that the building will cost and the money could be better used elsewhere.
Once the Campello force has a new building, this will enable the town hall to go ahead with ambitions plans for the l’Illeta dels Banyets, an archaeological site with Bronze Age, Iberian and Roman remains adjoining the former Guardia Civil headquarters.
The force moved to temporary rented premises near the mouth of the Rio Seco in 2016 but once the new headquarters are built, the old barracks will revert to the town hall and the l’Illeta dels Banyets project can go ahead.
