In April, 73 drivers in the province of Alicante were brought before the courts for road safety offences, according to a statement from the Guardia Civil.

Of these, 33 were prosecuted for driving without a valid permit or licence, and another 33 for driving under the influence of alcohol. Three drivers were found to have drugs in their system, two were charged with speeding, and one with reckless driving.

Across the wider Valencian Community, a total of 203 drivers faced prosecution for road safety violations. Among them, 92 were charged with driving without a permit or a licence. This group included 41 individuals who had lost all their licence points, eight who were provisionally disqualified by court order, two who were permanently banned, and 41 who had never obtained a licence.

Additionally, 98 drivers were prosecuted for driving under the influence of alcohol, five for drug use, six for reckless driving, and two for speeding.

Rural Revelry

Pilar de la Horadada has announced that on Saturday, May 17, the annual pilgrimage for San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers, will take place in Cañada de Praes.

The event will offer a range of activities for everyone. The fun for children will start at 11:00am followed by a community gathering at 2:00pm.

In the evening, at 7:30pm, the traditional pilgrimage and blessing of the fields will be held, a tribute to the area’s farming heritage. The day will wrap up with live music at 8:30pm.

All activities will be centred on Calle Semilleros in the Cañada de Praes district.

Irish Choral Glory

Torrevieja’s Municipal Choir School’s Symphony Choir has left a strong impression at the 70th Cork International Choral Festival in Ireland, where it won the award for the best performance of a piece by a living European composer.

The festival’s organisers and judges praised the choir’s performances, noting their excellent vocal technique, stage presence, and ability to interpret music with great emotion and precision.

Aside from the competition itself, the choir also connected with the local community by taking part in Sunday Mass at St. Patrick’s Church in Rochestown. Their performance of sacred music was deeply appreciated by the congregation, who thanked them warmly after the service. The choir later joined parishioners for a shared lunch, which was filled with gratitude and kind words from their hosts.

The choir’s award-winning piece was “Verde Mar,” a habanera by Bernadet Kuhne, which they performed with skill and passion during the contest.
This international recognition strengthens the reputation of the Choir. The achievement has been a proud moment for the town and its cultural life.

Whimsical Wonder

San Miguel de Salinas Council is inviting all local businesses and groups to take part in the “Whimsical Market” on May 24 and 25 at the Plaza de los Pozos.

The aim is to promote local shops and services. Those who sign up can present their products, offer special deals, and share the unique items or services they provide.

The event will also include live music, food tastings, prize draws, and fun activities for children, along with other surprises.

Torre Tennis

Elections for the new Board of Directors at the Torrevieja Tennis Club took place on May 4, drawing a high level of participation from club members. Two candidates were put forward, and following a well-attended vote, the results were officially confirmed on Sunday, May 11, in accordance with the club’s electoral calendar.

The elected Board will now take responsibility for managing the club over the next four years. The new leadership team, chosen by a majority vote, is headed by Igor Vinokurov as President, with Fernando Sánchez Sánchez taking on the role of Vice President. Salvador Calderón Mateo has been appointed Secretary, while Juan Carlos Carmona Triviño will serve as Treasurer.

The Board also includes Sergio Sáez Mañogil, Luis Álvarez Montesinos, Francisco García Arteaga, Guido Audisio Delgado, Antonia Baeza Mínguez and Salvador Ernesto Tortosa Navarro as members. Oscar Nicolas Pantoja joins the team as a collaborator, contributing to the broader support of club operations.

The Torrevieja Tennis Club extended its appreciation to all members who participated in the democratic process. With the new Board now in place, the club looks ahead to a fresh chapter of development and continued community engagement under its new leadership.

Garbage Guidelines

Residents of Aspe are being reminded to respect official rubbish disposal hours or risk facing fines of up to €750. The warning comes from the local council after 20 fines were issued in April for violations of the municipal waste ordinance.

According to the regulations, rubbish must be placed in containers between 9:00pm and midnight. This applies to both household and commercial waste, which must be securely sealed in bags before being deposited in the nearest available bin. If a container is full, residents are required to find the next closest one rather than leaving bags beside it.

The rule is particularly important in the town centre, where there is no door-to-door collection system in place. The council has urged the public to act responsibly in order to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the streets.
