World Cup celebrations in southern Spain ended in tragedy after a 39 year old Morocco fan died when the flag she was wearing became caught in the wheel of a motorcycle.

The freak accident happened late on Saturday night in Algeciras, Cádiz, as supporters celebrated Morocco’s 3 to 0 victory over Canada and the team’s place in the World Cup quarter finals.

The woman was travelling as a passenger on a motorcycle driven by her husband through the San García neighbourhood when the Moroccan flag she was wearing reportedly became entangled in the rear wheel.

The sudden force caused catastrophic injuries, according to Spanish media reports

Emergency crews unable to save her

Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the accident. Paramedics found the woman in cardiac arrest and immediately began resuscitation efforts before transferring her to Punta Europa Hospital.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, she later died from her injuries.

Spain’s National Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Initial reports indicate there was no collision with another vehicle, and the woman’s husband reportedly tested negative for alcohol.

Algeciras Mayor José Ignacio Landaluce expressed his condolences following the tragedy, describing the incident as devastating and offering support to the victim’s family.

Safety warning during celebrations

Algeciras, located on Spain’s southern coast opposite Morocco, has long-standing cultural and family links with its North African neighbour. Morocco’s progress in the World Cup has been widely celebrated across the city, with thousands of supporters taking to the streets following the victory.

The accident has also highlighted the dangers of wearing loose flags, scarves or other items of clothing while travelling on motorcycles or scooters. Road safety experts have long warned that fabric can quickly become entangled in moving wheels or chains, leading to catastrophic consequences.

Although fatalities of this kind are rare, similar accidents have been reported elsewhere during football celebrations when supporters have worn oversized flags while riding motorcycles.

Morocco’s victory has secured a quarter-final clash with France later this week, but celebrations in Spain have now been overshadowed by a heartbreaking accident that has left a family grieving and a community in mourning.

Police are expected to continue investigating the exact circumstances of the incident, although all indications currently point to a tragic accident rather than any criminal wrongdoing.
