Thousands of people filled the streets of Dénia over the weekend as the Costa Blanca town officially launched its annual Festa Major, with huge crowds gathering in the Glorieta del País Valencià for one of the biggest celebrations of the year. The opening day marked the start of several days of festivities, music and traditional events that attract residents and visitors from across the region.

Massive crowds mark the opening celebrations

The celebrations got underway on Saturday morning with a traditional parade led by the Quintà 2008 group and the town’s Fiesta Commission, who made their way from Plaza de la Constitució while distributing the annual festival booklets.

By midday, attention had shifted to the Glorieta del País Valencià, where thousands of people wearing brightly coloured shirts representing their local peñas (festival groups) gathered for the eagerly anticipated opening ceremony.

The symbolic firing of the opening rocket officially launched the Festa Major, triggering loud cheers as music filled the square and the celebrations burst into life. Local entertainer Sergio Dénia once again provided the soundtrack for the event, helping create an energetic party atmosphere that continued throughout the afternoon.

Music, celebrations and traditional events

After a short afternoon break, the crowds returned for the popular “Mediterrània” tardeo session, with live performances from Sergio Dénia alongside Lol i Pop.

While many festivalgoers stayed in the town centre enjoying the music and social atmosphere, others headed towards Marqués de Campo for one of the festival’s best-known traditions – the only urban running of the Bous a la Mar during this year’s celebrations.

Spectators lined the barriers to watch the cattle make their way through the streets before the traditional events continued at the port area, adding another layer to a packed programme of entertainment.

Family fun starts the festivities

The celebrations had actually begun a day earlier with an opening programme dedicated to children.

Families gathered in the Glorieta for water games, workshops, temporary tattoos and entertainment designed to help youngsters cool off during the summer heat. The event concluded with a children’s disco and a ceremonial rocket launched by Dénia’s Fallera Mayor Infantil, officially opening the festival for the town’s youngest residents.

One of Costa Blanca’s biggest summer festivals

Dénia’s Festa Major is one of the highlights of the Costa Blanca summer calendar, bringing together live music, parades, cultural traditions and family activities across several days.

With thousands already turning out for the opening weekend, organisers are expecting another strong attendance as the programme continues with concerts, fireworks, religious celebrations and more traditional events throughout the week.
