Malaga Nostrum shopping centre will bid farewell to its current cinema complex earlier than anticipated, with its last day set for June 9, 2025, to make way for a major redevelopment project that includes the arrival of US retail giant Costco.

The closure has been brought forward by continuing renovations and the need to demolish the old cinema building to accommodate Costco’s new hypermarket.

Originally, the plan was to keep the cinemas running during the transition, relocating them to a space previously occupied by Conforama. However, demolition work has already begun, forcing an earlier than expected shutdown. Screen announcements are currently showing before the start of films saying that June 8 will be the last day with a new premium cinema opening soon. The new cinema complex is hoped to open by Christmas 2025.

New cinema for Malaga with 19 screens and nine restaurants

The revamped Malaga Nostrum will feature a boutique shopping centre with 19 state-of-the-art cinema screens and nine new restaurants and shops. The new cinemas will incorporate cutting-edge digital technology, immersive sound systems, and reclining seats, emulating the premium cinema experience found in other major European cities.

The closure clears the path for Costco’s highly anticipated arrival, a big attraction in Malaga Nostrum’s modernisation plans, as the €24 million project includes a massive shopping space and 640 parking spaces on a 14,460-square-metre plot.

One of the big attractions will be a new Costco-affiliated petrol station which is currently under development on a 3,703-square-metre site, featuring nine fuel pumps with plans for potential expansion to 12. Partial demolition of adjacent commercial spaces has already begun to support the concept.

The Costco hypermarket is hoped to become a major commercial draw for Malaga, transforming Malaga Nostrum into a premier shopping destination. Although the temporary cinema closure may disappoint film fans, the promise of a cutting-edge cinema experience by Christmas reveals a silver lining for the community.
