THE REGION of Murcia has recorded its highest-ever monthly number of liver transplants, with 14 operations carried out in September thanks to high organ donation rates and the hard work of public healthcare teams.

The figure surpasses the previous record of 13 liver transplants, set in January 2019, marking a significant milestone for the region’s transplant services.
The Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca in Murcia, the region’s main centre for organ donation and transplantation, accounted for 56 donors during the first nine months of the year. This was 11 more than in the corresponding period of 2025 and included two paediatric donors.
Other hospitals across the region also contributed to the figures, with nine donors recorded at Hospital Morales Meseguer in Murcia, six at Hospital Reina Sofía, five at Hospital Santa Lucía in Cartagena, one at Hospital Rafael Méndez in Lorca and one at Hospital General Universitario Los Arcos del Mar Menor.
Dozens of organ donors this year: Murcia sets the standard for donation of organs and bone marrow
According to figures from the Regional Transplant Coordination Office, Murcia recorded 78 organ donors between January and September 2026, compared with 66 during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 12 donors, reflecting the continued generosity of local residents and their families.
By September 30, the region had carried out 173 solid-organ transplants, including 67 liver transplants, 91 kidney transplants, two combined kidney-pancreas transplants and 13 heart transplants. The number of liver transplants was 23 higher than during the same period in 2025, while kidney transplants increased by 10 and heart transplants by four. Three patients received two organs.
Murcia’s commitment to donation has extended beyond organ transplantation. The third edition of the ‘Un Match por Una Vida’ bone marrow donation campaign in May attracted 2,171 new potential donors, the highest total recorded nationally during the initiative. The region’s first popular race promoting organ donation also attracted more than 3,000 participants and registered 350 new potential donors.
