October 12 celebrations and national pride in Marbella

Marbella Council has unveiled a varied lineup of events to mark Hispanic Day on October 12, with historical tributes, community get-togethers, and multicultural festivities across the Costa del Sol city. 

With an eye to get residents involved, the programme covers themes as broad as scientific talks to flag giveaways and street parades, all to present Spain’s shared heritage with Latin America.

In the lead-up to the national holiday, free Spanish flags will be handed out from October 8 to 11 at key locations, including tourism offices in Plaza de los Naranjos, La Fontanilla, and San Pedro Alcantara, as well as district headquarters in Nueva Andalucia and Las Chapas. An additional pickup point is available at the Citizen Participation office on Calle Jacinto Benavente 10. More than 500 flags are up for grabs, encouraging locals to adorn their balconies in a show of national pride. Complementing this, over 120 flags and pennants will be flying along streets and public spaces throughout the week, in a bid to have the city turn into a sea of red and yellow.

The day’s centrepiece on October 12 begins at 10am with a ceremonial flag-raising at the Glorieta del Bulevar Principe Alfonso de Hohenlohe corner with Ashmawi. The event will feature the city’s largest flag, which measures 75 square metres, and will be hoisted by the local police, accompanied by the national anthem performed by the municipal band.

The celebrations continue with joint activities honouring the Guardia Civil’s patron saint, the Virgin of Pilar. In the evening, the Vazquez Clavel Neighbourhood Association will lead a procession of the Virgin of Pilar at 7pm, departing from the Church of the Incarnation and winding through the historic centre to her chapel on Calle Reino de Aragon. So, watch out for roadblocks and changes.

For a festive close, the Hispanic Day Festival on October 12 will light up Parque de la Represa from October 10 to 13, courtesy of the Foreign Residents delegation. Expect a lively mix of performances and cuisine showcasing flavours and traditions from Spain and Latin American nations, with evenings filled with music, dance, and transatlantic camaraderie.
