The fully-fledged Santa factory in rural Axarquia

Every December, the Circo Escuela Fantasia of Colmenar trades its year-round circus workshops for a full-fledged “Santa Claus Factory” – a sprawling outdoor Christmas village where children are officially recruited as Santa’s elf assistants for the day.

Opened on November 15 and running every weekend and public holiday until December 23, the village turns the school’s grounds into a winter wonderland of wooden cabins, fairy-tale decorations, twinkling lights, and the unmistakable scent of pine and roasted chestnuts. What began as a local initiative has quickly become an essential family experience, with tickets regularly selling out days in advance.

Kids become Santa’s elf helpers for the day

From the moment families arrive, children are handed a special “Elf Assistant Passport”. Each completed activity earns a stamp, and a fully stamped passport officially certifies the bearer as one of Santa’s helpers. Young visitors sort Santa’s mountain of letters, assemble last-minute toys on the production line, wrap presents, create their own Christmas crafts to take home, and even meet Mother Christmas herself. Friendly farm animals wander the paths, happily accepting treats from little hands.

The grand finale, of course, is the personal audience with Santa himself. Arriving dramatically on his signature red motorcycle rather than the traditional sleigh (a nod, perhaps, to the mild Andalucian climate), Santa welcomes children into his cosy wooden cabin where they can hand-deliver their wish lists and pose for photographs.

Because the entire experience takes place outdoors among the olive groves and hills of Colmenar, organisers strongly recommend warm clothing, as evenings can be much chillier than the coast. Advance booking is essential; tickets cost a flat €15 for both adults and children and are only available online through the official website, where visitors also choose their time slot.
