With more than 300 days of sunshine per year and a privileged Mediterranean climate, Almuñecar found itself officially listed as one of the most ideal destinations for those seeking tranquility and quality of life in retirement. This small town on Granada’s coast, has a population of around just 27,000 inhabitants, many of whom are retirees, including British and German expatriates. In a ranking of the best places to retire to for UK expats, Almuñecar came 2nd, closely following Calpe in the Costa Blanca region.
Among the factors that make this town an attractive place to retire are the low cost of living, accessible medical services, and a diverse selection of social life options. As well, rental prices are more affordable compared to other tourist areas on the Spanish coast. However, property and rental prices are expected to rise over 2026 as the town becomes one of the most sought after destinations for expat retirees.
Everyone wants to retire to Almuñecar
Almuñecar caught the eyes of judges not only for its climate and beaches but also for its rich heritage. Over the centuries, this locality has witnessed the passage of various civilisations, including Romans, Visigoths, and Muslims, whose traces can still be appreciated in its architecture.
The Castle of San Miguel is one of the town’s most emblematic sites. This Arab fortress offers spectacular panoramic views of the city and the coast. Other points of interest include the Majuelo Park, known for its Roman archaeological remains, and the Almedina Walls, dating back to the Muslim era. Visitors can also enjoy a stroll through the narrow streets of the old town, characterised by their Andalusian charm, with white houses adorned with flowers.
Almuñecar’s beaches are another of its main attractions. Its 19 kilometres of coastline feature incredible sandy stretches, with cliffs, ravines, and small coves. Among the most notable are San Cristóbal Beach, Velilla Beach, and La Herradura Beach, all ideal for relaxation or practicing water sports. Diving enthusiasts will enjoy one of the most impressive seabeds in southern Spain. The town also offers a varied range of cultural activities, such as festivals and concerts, held throughout the year.
A Tranquil and Active Retirement
A study by Moving to Spain, which evaluated 44 localities across Spain, ranked Almuñecar as the best destination for retirees. Among the criteria analysed were the proportion of retired residents, wealth taxes, cost of living, and safety. The combination of these factors has established this town as an ideal refuge for those wishing to enjoy a tranquil yet active retirement.
