Nearly six years after Tivoli World closed its gates, excitement for the beloved Benalmadena theme park remains strong with local residents and holidaymakers continuing to share hopes for its eventual return.

Fresh social media posts circulating this month suggest interest in the park hasn’t faded. Community pages and local groups are again discussing redevelopment plans, with many fans celebrating the possibility that Tivoli could reopen as a modern leisure destination while keeping some of its nostalgic charm and others feeling slightly less positive about the refurbished attraction.

Tivoli World, once one of the coasts best-known family attractions, closed in 2020 after financial and legal disputes. Since then, the future of the site has been the subject of intense local debate, with many residents calling for the park to be saved.

All the necessary documentation has been sent to begin the transformation

In October 2025, Benalmadena Town Hall confirmed that owners had submitted the necessary technical documentation to begin the site’s urban transformation. Mayor Juan Antonio Lara stated the project is progressing on schedule according to the council agreement.

The ambitious proposal features a reopened theme park with a new commercial centre and two hotels. Crucially, the hotels and shopping hub are not permitted to open until the park itself is operational. With a projected investment between €100 million and €200 million, the development is expected to create approximately 1,000 new jobs.

There is yet to be any formal confirmation that construction has begun, no detailed launch timetable has been released and 2028 is still being referenced as a possible reopening date. Even with nothing formal in place it hasn’t stopped the discussion still being discussed enthusiastically on social media.

Online discussions continue to build excitement around the parks potential start dates

So how are the public feeling about the reopening?

Online comments show a mix of affection for the park and scepticism about timelines. Some supporters describe Tivoli as a childhood staple and a place they visited repeatedly with family, calling it great for kids and a memorable part of life on the Costa del Sol.

Others are more cautious. Several commenters point to the project’s dependence on urban-planning approvals and say 2028 would be a best-case scenario. Concerns also focus on practical impacts, including traffic, crowding, and the potential loss of free parking. Others worrying about how hotels and retail space could change the area.

Even with uncertainty around dates and works, the emotional connection to Tivoli World still stands.
