A vintage Mercedes-Benz will be up for auction in May and is estimated to fetch a hefty price of more than £150,000 for its association with pop culture icon, Marilyn Monroe.

Hollywood-linked 1950 Mercedes-Benz up for sale

The 1950 170 S (W136) is said to be the same one that Marilyn Monroe drove through the streets of Greece during her holiday there in 1956. Her part ownership is supported by an insurance document signed “Marilyn Monroe” and dated from February to August 1956 which aligns with the time Monroe spent living in Europe.

This was a well-documented period in Monroe’s life, most notable for her marriage to playwright Arthur Miller in June of 1956.

Historical significance

The 170 S model played a key role in Mercedes-Benz’s post-war recovery, evolving from the earlier 170 series. It offered improved refinement, upgraded suspension, and a 1.7-litre engine producing around 52bhp, making it a benchmark for durable yet comfortable motoring in the early 1950s.

The car has been well preserved. Auction listings highlight that the model remains mechanically consistent with its early 1950s engineering, part of what makes it desirable to collectors of post-war European classics. It has undergone extensive restoration to maintain the car’s classic features and historical prestige.

Discovery of personal artefacts

In fact, it was during this no-expenses spared restoration that the car’s current owner discovered the connection to the Hollywood starlet. Inside the car, a luggage set baring the unmistakable MM insignia was found, along with a bespoke dashboard plaque. These items will also be sold alongside the car, bolstering the auction’s standing.

Collector appeal

Interest in the car extends beyond classic car collectors. This combination of automotive history and Hollywood legacy that makes the Mercedes stand out. Both classic vehicle collectors and hard-core Monroe fans view it as more than just a restored car, but as a rare cultural artefact tied to one of the most photographed figures of the 20th century.

The vehicle is being offered through Iconic Auctioneers and is set to go under the hammer on May 16, with estimate bids beginning at £120,000 to £160,000. However, strong interest suggests the final price could exceed expectations depending on competitive bidding.
