Almuñecar has just completed the rollout of 14 intelligent pedestrian crossings equipped with luminous LED technology. These novel crossings now have better visibility and driver awareness in important areas of the popular town.
Fourteen zebra crossings across three busy locations
Installation covers the San Cristóbal promenade, Carrera de la Concepción and the Altillo promenade. Some crossings feature double configurations for roads with two lanes, while others suit single-lane sections. This tailored approach matches the specific layout of each street.
LED lights integrated into the road surface and signage activate to clearly signal the presence of pedestrians. Activation occurs particularly during low-light conditions, giving drivers advanced warning and reducing collision risks at these busy spots.
Focus on pedestrian protection in high-traffic zones
Work targeted points with heavy footfall to deliver practical safety gains. The system uses active signalling that draws immediate attention from approaching vehicles. Such measures promote calmer, more attentive driving without major disruption to traffic flow.
European funding supports sustainable mobility improvements
Total investment reached €96,558, taken from the town’s Tourism Sustainability Plan and backed by Next Generation EU funds. Execution took around two months and forms part of broader efforts to upgrade urban mobility, accessibility and overall visitor experience in Almuñecar and La Herradura.
The company Proseñal carried out the technical implementation. The project is a path of goals for safer streets and modern infrastructure that benefits both residents and tourists exploring this attractive coastal destination.
Improved appeal for safe and accessible tourism
New crossings will strengthen perceptions of Almuñecar as a destination that prioritises safety and thoughtful urban design. Visitors gain greater confidence when walking around streets, especially in evenings or in poorer weather. The local council views the initiative as a step towards higher-quality public spaces that complement the area’s natural attractions and tourism strengths.
Pedestrians can now cross with improved protection, and drivers receive clearer cues that encourage responsible behaviour on the roads.
