An unusual smuggling attempt has been uncovered in the Netherlands. Workers at a DHL sorting centre in Beek near Maastricht Aachen Airport noticed something odd about one of the parcels passing along the conveyor belt recently. Quick thinking by a postal employee led to an immediate call to police in the Westelijke Mijnstreek area.
Police inspection reveals a tampered with toy
Officers arrived at the facility and examined a light brown teddy bear inside the package. Initial checks just squeezing the toy showed the innocent-looking teddy bear felt unusual in several spots. Closer inspection exposed irregular stitching around the head and back, clear signs the bear had been tampered with, opened and re-sewn.
Cash neatly hidden in the lining
Carefully prying open the teddy bear revealed masses of folded €50 banknotes, concealed between the inner lining and stuffing. Forensic teams counted a total of approximately €50,000 in cash. Police described the find as completely unexpected in their official social media update.

Ongoing investigation into sender of the teddy and recipient
The police, of course, seized the money straight away and passed the banknotes on to the forensic investigation department for closer and more detailed analysis. Detectives are continuing efforts to identify both the person who sent the parcel and its intended recipient. No arrests have been reported so far.
DHL sorting centre incident sparks curiosity
This quirky cash concealment method has drawn attention across multiple Dutch media outlets. Similar attempts occasionally surface in parcel networks, yet hiding large sums inside children’s toys remains pretty rare. DHL has indicated it will comment on the case shortly.
The discovery serves as a reminder that routine sorting processes can uncover elaborate efforts to move undeclared funds. Police are calling on anyone with information about the mystery teddy bear package to come forward as enquiries proceed.
