Emergency services jumped into action on the Spanish island of Lanzarote, near a hotel in the municipality of Yaiza, after a British tourist fell onto a maritime breakwater. The incident happened at around 7:10am on the morning of Monday, May 11, in the surroundings of a hotel in Puerto Caldero.
Where the incident took place
To be specific, the man fell around the Hesperia Hotel in the Cortijo Viejo area of Lanzarote. The man had fallen from a height of about six metres, and into a difficult to access area.
First responders were dispatched that morning after they were alerted through a 112 call. The Local Police of Yaiza, firefighters from the Consortium of Security and Emergencies, as well as personnel from the Canary Islands Emergency Services have also moved to the location.
British tourist, 54, injured in a fall on a Lanzarote breakwater
The British tourist, a 54-year-old man, had fallen down onto the breakwater, a rocky area of the coast not intended for traversal. The man was successfully rescued, though not without injury; he suffered multiple moderate contusions, a fractured hip, swelling, and a cut on the head. He was carefully lifted using the first responders’ safety tools, transferred on a stretcher to the ambulance, and then taken to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital for treatment.
Recent falls and incidents in the Canary Islands: Holidaymakers be warned
Sadly, it is not the only accident to happen in the Canary Islands this year. At the tail end of April, a British tourist tragically passed away after falling down a stairwell inside a holiday flat complex in Tenerife. The event happened after a festival.
These dangerous recent incidents in the Canary Islands highlight the importance of being careful even in holiday hotspots like Lanzarote. These types of accidents can be common in holiday and resort areas, where night life events and alcohol consumption is prevalent. Especially in multi-storey accommodations, rocky cliffside areas on the beach, and other areas that are high up or difficult to access by authorities, one misstep could cause a devastating fall.
For this reason, it is important that holidaymakers prioritise safety above all else when they are enjoying Spain’s shores, coves, and cliffsides.
