Over 65's travel free Credit: Manilva Town Hall
Excellent news for residents in Manilva aged over 65 as they will soon be able to use local public transport free of charge after councillors approved a new bonobus fare system designed to reduce travel costs across the town.
Plans received unanimous backing during a council meeting this week, with local leaders describing the measure as an important part of the future to improve daily life for residents and encourage greater use of public transport.
Free travel for pensioners in Manilva
A bonobus is a rechargeable travel card or multi-trip bus pass used on public transport in Spain. Instead of buying a single ticket each time you board, passengers load credit or a set number of journeys onto the card and pay reduced fares.
The great news is that people aged 65 and over will pay nothing for journeys on Manilva’s urban bus network once the updated fares come into effect. Current ticket prices stand at €1.25, though the new bonobus system will reduce costs for several groups.
Discounted fares of €0.75 will apply to passengers with disabilities, large families and holders of a youth card. Young people using both the youth card and bonobus will pay €0.50 per journey. General users with a bonobus card will also see fares reduced to €0.75.
Push towards more affordable public transport
Mayor Mario Jimenez wants to encourage residents to make greater use of buses, as public transport is both more economical and environmentally friendly. Transport councillor Laura Salazar also backed the new pricing structure. The town hall stated that the move aims to improve access to public services while easing transport costs for households across the town.
Changes are expected to take effect after the required public notice period of 30 days.
These changes brought into play in Manilva are part of growing change across Andalucia to keep public transport fares low, including discounts for young passengers and multi-trip travel cards. Easing traffic and parking issues and being kinder to the environment.
