Firefighters tackled a blaze on the second floor of Torrevieja Hospital on Friday afternoon, May 22. The incident began shortly after midday and quickly called for emergency action across the building in this key Alicante facility.
Injuries reported among patients and staff
One person sustained serious burns while another required intensive care admission due to smoke inhalation. Medical teams also treated six hospital workers for smoke inhalation after they assisted with patient evacuation and support duties during the fast-moving response. Authorities confirmed the injuries occurred as events developed rapidly inside the structure.
Fire services deploy multiple crews
Five fire crews from Torrevieja and Orihuela stations attended the scene without delay. Crews achieved control of the fire by 1.20pm but continued ventilation work to clear smoke and gases from the affected area. Emergency teams focused efforts on full extinguishment operations while maintaining safety across all zones.
Preventive measures protect patients
Staff carried out a full evacuation of the second floor as a precaution while teams assessed risks and secured the location. Regional health officials described the action as necessary to safeguard everyone inside the facility during the incident and prevent further exposure to hazards.
Health minister visits site
Marciano Gomez, the Valencian Community Health Minister, travelled directly to Torrevieja Hospital to receive updates on the conditions of those injured and the overall situation at the site.
Investigators examine possible causes
Officials have yet to determine the exact origin of the fire. Teams continue to explore whether patient negligence played any role in starting the blaze inside the hospital building.
Past incident raises facility questions
Similar concerns surfaced one year ago when an electrical failure led to a minor fire incident in the hospital delivery suite area. That event sparked ongoing discussions about the condition of certain older parts of the building infrastructure and highlighted repeated questions over maintenance standards in the complex.
