Seafaring athletes along the Costa del Sol are getting into shape for an exciting season filled with coastal action and community spirit.
League launch brings high female involvement
Organisers announced the XIII Liga Provincial de Barcas de Jabega Copa Pepe Almoguera will begin on 30 May in Pedregalejo. Events run every Saturday through until the end of August, with the final trophy presentation at Playa de la Misericordia featuring the Gran Premio Diputacion de Malaga.
Jabega boats represent iconic wooden vessels from Malaga’s maritime heritage. These historic rowing boats once served professional fishermen for net-hauling operations along the Andalusian coast. Today, locals maintain them for competitive sport, preserving centuries-old techniques through team rowing that demands strength, coordination and local pride.
Participation has reached 60 per cent women this year, up five per cent from last season. Around 500 rowers will compete in this celebration of maritime heritage and athletic skill. Three Axarquia clubs join the action with regattas scheduled in Rincon de la Victoria, La Cala del Moral and Torre del Mar.
Full calendar offers multiple coastal venues
Competitors will face 11 regattas across various locations plus the grand final. Action continues on June 6 in Huelin, then moves to Benalmadena on June 13 and La Carihuela on June 20. Other stop-offs include Rincon de la Victoria on June 27, La Cala del Moral on July 4 and El Palo on July 11.
Later dates visit La Araña on July 25, Torremolinos on July 18, Torre del Mar on August 1 and Puerto de Málaga on August 8 before the closing ceremony.
Eleven Malaga Province clubs take part overall with 55 crews across seven categories and 1,250 active licences. Streaming coverage via the Asociación Tradicional de Remo YouTube channel lets fans follow every race live. An official app provides real-time updates during competitions.
Local councils and rowing associations are working together to deliver smooth events despite occasional weather disruptions. Awards at the presentation recognised long-term dedication to preserving Jabega boat traditions.
This growing sporting calendar strengthens links between coastal communities and their seafaring past while encouraging wider involvement in physical activity. Families and visitors can enjoy free access to many races set against Malaga’s attractive shoreline.
