Albox saw an incredible turnout recently when almost 900 people, young and old, gathered for the Charity Night Race Against Cancer. Originally scheduled for the end of April, extreme weather conditions forced a postponement. Despite the delays, the 2026 edition recorded its highest turnout and biggest fundraising effort to date.

Plaza Mayor becomes the centre of Albox Charity Race event

Plaza Mayor was transformed into a sporting hub on Friday when runners, walkers and supporters gathered for the night race.

The youngest runners set off first, but before the start of the 5k races, the Mayor of Albox, Maria del Mar Alfonso Perez, presented the president of the local Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) branch with a cheque worth €4,000, the total amount raised. The cheque not only represents the hard work of all involved in organising the night race, but also the countless cancer patients set to benefit from AECC’s support.

Emotional tribute honours cancer patients and loved ones

As much as the evening was dedicated to fighting cancer and supporting patients, it was also a chance to remember those who fought valiantly until the end. The event struck an emotional note for many whose lives and loved ones have been affected by cancer, particularly when the Walking for Life Albox group led a minute silence.

Across similar AECC-supported events in Spain, organisers continue to highlight the dual purpose of these gatherings: raising funds for research and providing direct support services for patients and families, alongside community awareness and remembrance activities.

Runners take on 5K route through historic streets of Albox

After the touching tribute, runners set off for the main event of the evening. Participants traversed a five-kilometre circular route through Albox’s historic streets, right as the sun was slowly beginning to set.

A joyful atmosphere settled over the Plaza Mayor, which served as both the start and finish line. The gathered crowd of supporters cheered wildly until the very last runner crossed the finish line.

Juan Manuel Tejada took first place in the men’s category with a time of 00:16:40, while Manoli Tristan, competing with Club Atletismo Sayma Nijar, won the women’s category with a time of 00:20:08.
